Social media can be a great way socialise with others. It is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family, share your thoughts and updates on life and to connect with others. However, social media can be addicting for many and this can be frustrating and detrimental to your life and others around you. Here are 10 signs you are addicted to social media…
1. You just don’t know when to switch off.
You constantly find yourself checking Facebook updates, tweeting relentlessly or re-blogging Tumblr pictures 24/7. If you find it hard to switch off and focus on normal day-to-day activities then chances are you’re addicted.
2. You feel the ‘need’ or the ‘urge’ to check what’s happening on social media.
Similar to the previous point: you feel as though you cannot go for a day without checking Facebook. Don’t worry, going for sometime without checking Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr/Pinterest will not harm you at all.
3. You cannot live without it.
You cannot imagine yourself getting on with your life without any form of social media. You treat social media as a necessity that is a big part of your life rather than treating it as just a small part of your time.
4. You are on social media even when you are at an event.
Sending a little tweet or a Facebook update to let others know where you are and what you are doing is fine, but constantly scrolling through your Facebook feed and Twitter timeline when you are at an event is rude and makes you look unsociable.
5. You are on social media even you are on holiday.
In this day and age it is understandable if you want to upload your holiday snaps in an instant on Instagram, or create your own photo album to show friends and family on Facebook. But scrolling though social media channels when you are supposed to be relaxing defeats the purpose of a holiday doesn’t it?
6. You always upload pictures of yourself to gain attention.
There is nothing wrong with uploading ‘selfies’ but if you are always uploading pictures of yourself simply for the sake of ‘likes’, attention, approval and validation from others, then this could be signs of not only social media addiction but low self-esteem and insecurity too.
7. You like your own statuses and content.
This is rather narcissistic and desperate…
8. You use the word ‘hashtag’ in normal conversations.
No. Just no. Don’t do this. It’s weird.
9. You don’t engage in normal face-to-face conversations.
When hanging out with your friends/family/other half, you scroll you phone for social media updates instead of engaging in normal conversation, especially over the dinner table. In addition to this, you share way too much information of your problems on social media instead of talking about them face to face with a your friends/family/other. Social media should not be used in replacement of a therapist.
10. The first thing you do when you wake up in the morning is check you phone for updates on your social media channels.
It’s fine to check your phone to turn off your alarm, but if the first thing you do when you wake up every morning is start scrolling social media channels then you are truly a social media addict.
