Artist of the Month: Mabel – BRIT Sessions, Hidden Gems and Harry Styles

After beginning her music career with her first single ‘Know Me Better’ in 2015, Mabel has risen to popularity with her 2017 album ‘Ivy and Roses’ and hit singles in 2018, which have seen her move into the realm of household names. After her album release at the end of last year, being announced as the support act for Harry Styles’ debut tour, and being nominated for the Critic’s Choice BRIT Award this month, it’s safe to say 2018 is off to an even better start for Mabel. Hence why, after listening to ‘Fine Line’ on repeat for the last four weeks, we are crowning Mabel our Artist of the Month for February.

R&B Roots

Spanish born, and raised between Britain and Sweden, Mabel began her career taking most of her inspiration from the music of her parents, Neneh Cherry and Cameron McVey. Like the music of her mother and father, Mabel transcendeds traditional genres, mixing R&B with pop, and a hint of blues.

After beginning her career studying Music production and writing her first songs at 16, Mabel also doesn’t shy away from the upbeat, with many songs featuring beats and layering. Her two latest singles released in 2018, both featuring Not3s, gained her global recognition and amassed 20 million combined streams on Spotify.

Hidden Gem Song

Mabel’s album ‘Ivy to Roses’, which included the hit ‘Finders Keepers’ is full of songs worthy of top 40 spots. However this month’s hidden gem pick is a tune quite different to Mabel’s usual sound… Taking a more slow and sultry approach, album track ‘Ivy’ brings soul, powerful piano and a more bluesy side to the album.
