Get Creative With Makeup: Are You Ready to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone?

“You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

― Roy T. Bennett

There is no denying that within our comfort zone we are sheltered in a blanket of security and relief. When we are challenged to break beyond our boundaries we feel intimidated and frightened. It’s often these feelings that push us to achieve great things that we otherwise wouldn’t if we stuck to habit and routine.

In order to evolve in all aspects of life we must be open to reaching beyond the point of our comforts. Leaping into the unknown, which involves trying things that we don’t have the answers to – is all part and parcel to the development of reaching new heights.

It can be hard looking for a place to start. Many people don’t know how they can step out of their comfort zone without plummeting head first into the deep end.

Well, why not explore the world of fashion and beauty to try something new? Namely with makeup. It’s not only a fun way to step out of your comfort zone. It’s one that surprisingly helps build confidence and self belief. Experimenting with makeup can start out for many as a hobby. Over time that hobby develops into a creative skill and that skill can open many doors to which the possibilities are endless!

For me, sitting down to do my makeup routine is therapeutic. It’s my time to do what I enjoy doing and I get to have fun with it. The best thing about makeup is that there are no boundaries. Despite the stereotypical beliefs that makeup is only used to “hide blemishes” or to “impress people”. It provides you with a platform to showcase your talents and is ultimately a form of expression.

When on the path of discovery, not everyone knows how to express themselves.

In this, makeup is a great way to start. It is amazing how a coat of mascara or a bit of bronzer can bring you from feeling hesitant and shy to outgoing and spirited. The saying is true – when you look good, you feel good!

Don’t get me wrong, we all have days when we feel down and everything looks bleak. All it takes is for one person to compliment your eye-shadow or your outfit, and automatically you feel a little boost of confidence and bounce to your step.

Not only that but if someone decides to take inspiration from your makeup or your outfit, it can aid us in empowering each other. It reminds us that we can step outside of our limits. It pays off because it adds that little bit more self-assurance. Knowing that someone has very openly admired something that you have created, so much so that they wanted to recreate it themselves. Who knows, you may have even motivated them to step outside of their security bubble.

I know from experience how easy it is to get caught in the same smokey eye and nude lip loop – it is an easy go-to. But there is so much more that you can achieve in terms of using makeup as a tool to step beyond your comfort zone. Although in saying that, don’t feel like you have to throw yourself into any big or extreme changes, it could be that you decide to wear a coloured eyeliner instead of the usual black or you may opt for that lipstick you always put on then rub off again. If you really want to get the creative juices flowing you could try matching your makeup look to your outfit, which may mean using bold or bright eye-catching colours!

Don’t be afraid to experiment and have some fun, its not permanent after all!

It may not even be that you step out of your comfort zone with makeup – some people step out of their comfort zone without it! For many of us, painting our faces integrates itself into our daily routine. Before you know it you can’t remember the last time you went out without makeup. That is completely fine. I will be the first to admit, there was a stage where I became reliant on makeup to make me feel more confident. Wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without it. I was just worried about what people would think or say.

Though, I soon realised that people won’t look at you funny nor will they point out that you aren’t wearing any makeup. To put it bluntly – people don’t care! The fact of the matter is, we are all guilty of being too hard on ourselves from time to time.

It relates back to what I was saying in the beginning, stepping out of our comfort zones tends to offer us far more benefits than it does negatives.

Beauty influencers on YouTube started the trend of ‘Get Ready With Me’. They would speak to their followers while getting ready and doing their makeup for the day. However, many of them have begun doing the opposite – ‘Get Unready With Me’ whereby they show their glam down routine. It just proves that no matter how skillful someone may be at makeup compared to another, we are all human. We all have imperfections which we should embrace. It’s what makes you YOU. Everyone is unique, and no two people are alike. Whether it’s experimenting with makeup or without it – don’t be afraid to try something new. You never know what you might discover.

I believe that it takes something to push us outside of our elements to really understand ourselves and to understand what we are capable of. It often widens our perspectives and helps us develop a whole new mindset. Maybe a new found feeling of self-belief that we never knew we had. Stepping out of your comfort zone even once, makes it easier and more likely you’ll do it again so why not experiment and see where it takes you!

Be you, be confident and embrace your uniqueness.
