Interview: Aslove

French electro pop DJ, producer and artist Aslove has garnered a lot of attention since his first cover in January 2015, and rightly so. At only 22 years old, Aslove has amassed over 5 million streams on his first radio hit in February 2017 based on a Mia Wray’s cover of ‘Put Your Records On’. With his new EP ‘Prefaces’ set for release this year, providing a balance of pop, house, funk and a strong electronic vibe, Aslove is set to be one to watch in 2018.

WTYB: You are set to release your EP ‘Prefaces’ early this year, what can we expect from it?

Aslove: I can’t wait to release this EP! I finished it a few months ago, so I can’t wait to share it and get the first feedback on it. With this EP, my goal is to share my main three artistic directions as an artist. That’s why I called it ‘Preface(s)’, it represents my three faces and also it’s also the preface of my first album which will also be completed with very different tracks resulting from these various influences of mine.

WTYB: You do a lot of remixes and covers, how do you go about choosing songs to remix?

Aslove: Sure, I love remixing because it’s very interesting to completely rethink a song. In general, if I think I can do ‘better than the original’, I say yes. Then, I can do chilled out remixes or club remixes, depending on my feelings. If you listen to the remix I made for Carla Bruni and the last one I produced for Portugal The Man – you’ll see the energy is clearly different!

WTYB: The new EP will feature some original tracks though, what was the creative process for these songs like?

Aslove: I actually composed and recorded everything in my own home studio. But for one of the songs of the EP, ‘When You’re Crazy’, I wanted to complete my recordings in a big studio in Paris to explore more things. Especially because this track is really instrumental in the making, with guitars and a brass section.

WTYB: If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be and why?

Aslove: I recently discovered a great artist with whom I would like to collaborate, his name is BØRNS. He is American and just released an album that I really like. He’s doing some alternative rock and I’m convinced it’s great to mix the influences between electronic music and rock music.

WTYB: How did you come up with your stage name Aslove

It comes from a Jimi Hendrix’s album, called ‘Axis Bold As Love’. I saw this album in my parents’ house during my childhood, and I decided to create a nickname using ‘As’ and ‘Love’. Aslove was born this way !

WTYB: What artists and producers are your biggest inspirations?

Aslove: I listen to a lot of music but you might be surprised from my daily playlists as there is not so much electronic music. It goes from The Strokes to Anderson.Paak, Prince, Justice, Royal Blood or The Beatles. These are bands that inspire me in my daily life. Regarding my main inspirations as a producer, if I had to name a few producers, I would say Mark Ronson and Max Martin.

WTYB: What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the music industry?

Aslove: Working a lot with passion and being extremely patient.

WTYB: What inspired you to first start making music, and in particular electronic music?

Aslove: It all began with Justice’s first album, ‘Cross’, it was the perfect link between rock music and electronic music. It was a kind of revelation for me, as I was playing drums and guitars in a small local rock band at this time.

WTYB: You have had a lot of success with you remixes and covers of tracks like “Put Your Records On” and Katy Perry’s ‘Bon Appétit”, how do you celebrate your success?

Aslove: Generally, I celebrate my success dancing with Ben, my dog… (laughs).

WTYB: Lastly, what can we expect from you and your music in 2018?

Aslove: I hope to continue to meet many different people, keep on playing my music in front of thousands of people, traveling and sharing my original tracks with the largest amount of listeners. I’ve started the year with several remixes (Jacob Banks, Mattway, Huko…) and I have a few big ones coming up. Follow me on my socials to keep being updated.
