American singer-songwriter, Molly Kate Kestner has made a name for herself, not only writing for the likes of Kelly Clarkson and supporting Wrabel and Pheobe Ryan on tour, but also with the immense success of her first single ‘His Daughter’. Her debut has been streamed 15 million times. 2017 has seen Molly release five new singles, so we caught up with her to talk about her new song ‘Footprints’ and what 2018 will have in store…
WTYB: Your song, and its music video, ‘Footprints’, have recently been released and draw on your personal experience and relationship with your brother. How do you normally go about writing your songs?
Molly Kate Kestner: Usually when I’m writing songs for myself they start off with lyrics. Then I’ll find the chords and melody that fits the mood of the story!
WTYB: How do you go about writing songs for other people? Is it different to writing for yourself?
Kestner: I would say the only difference in writing for someone else is that I don’t call the shots when it comes to style, but that’s okay! It’s a fun challenge to write for someone who’s music is different than mine. But, sometimes if their style is similar to mine, then I just write as if I’m writing for myself. That’s what I did when I wrote for Kelly Clarkson.
WTYB: You’ve collaborated with some amazing artists so far, is there anyone you would like to add to that list?
Kestner: I think my top three to work with would probably be Ed Sheeran, Adele and Sam Smith!
WTYB: What is one song you wish you had written?
Kestner: ‘Human Diary’ by Danielle Bradbery! I believe the writers are Josh Kerr & Emily Weisband. I think the concept is so relatable but unique! I love the lyrics.
WTYB: What are you listening to at the moment?
Kestner: Well, honestly… lots of Christmas music. Michael Buble, Justin Bieber and Bing Crosby are my favourite three Christmas albums!
WTYB: You have 15 million views on your video for ‘His Daughter’, how do you celebrate that kind of success?
Kestner: I think making the most of the platform I’ve been given is the best way I can celebrate it. Which means working my very hardest and creating content that is worth paying attention to.
WTYB: What do you think has been your most career-changing moment?
Kestner: I would probably say having two songs on Kelly Clarkson’s record. Even though it is a songwriter credit, I think it also helps my artist career and has really opened so many doors for me!
WTYB: You supported Wrabel on his 2017 West Coast Tour, what has been your favourite memory/ part of touring?
Kestner: Yes! I also had the chance to support Phoebe Ryan on her fall tour. I think my favorite touring memory is probably tied between getting to play my first ever Minnesota show (we packed the place out) and my husband surprising me at my San Francisco show!
WTYB: You recently did an ad campaign for Jeep, what was it like shooting for that?
Kestner: So incredible! The Jeep team was so great to work with and I had a blast dancing to my music and talking about what it means to be a renegade.
WTYB: Finally, what can we expect from you in 2018?
Kestner: More music, more tour dates and more love.
