Interview: TESS

22-year-old electro pop singer and song writing sensation TESS, wowed us with her self-titled EP in 2017, but is set to leave us even more enamoured in 2018. With songs that project her bold personality, female power and self-love anthems like her most recent hit “Dark But Beautiful”, TESS has even gained attention from the likes of Elton John for her hit “Love Gun” and Zane Lowe. We at i the Stylist caught up with her to discuss inspirations, 2018 resolutions, dream destinations and new music…

You’ve recently released your music video for ‘Dark but Beautiful’. What was it like filming that?

The shooting was really fun, all the cast was amazing, super talented and very friendly. I was so lucky to shoot in LA, I’m in love with this city. I discovered Joshua Tree, and found it magical, the rocks, the vegetation, the sky, everything was so beautiful. The shoot in the swimming pool was harder, because the water was so cold and it was at night until 2am. But I’m really happy of the result so it was worth it!

‘Dark but Beautiful’ has such a powerful message! Tell us a bit more about the inspiration and meaning behind it?

Dark but Beautiful is about a difficult and complicated love story between two people living in two different worlds. But it shows that when things get hard, when obstacles stand in your way, Love shows you the light and give you strength to fight for what you want. There’s a message of hope saying that together we are stronger and everything is possible even in the darkest hour.

You write your own music and it’s amazing ! What normally inspires your songs and how do you go about writing them?

Everything can inspire me. I’m very sensitive, and pay attention to a lot of things around me. I can be affected by little things and write songs about it. I like to mix reality and fantasy, so that people can never know what’s real and what’s not.

What is one song you wish you had written?

The’ A Team’ by Ed Sheeran. I love the story behind it, it’s very emotional and real. Also I think it’s this song that made me want to write my own songs.

Who are some of your favourite artists at the moment?

At the moment, I like a lot of female artists like Julia Michaels, Sigrid, Astrid S., Anne-Marie, and Kailee Morgue.

You have released an EP last year and we love it, what can we expect from you this year?

My first album will be released this year and I’m so excited to share a little more of my world with the public!

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m working on my debut album, I’m so excited to be writing new songs!

Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions or big goals for 2018?

The most important thing for me is to keep doing music, writing my songs, sharing them to the public, and to enjoy it! We will see how it goes.

You’re very stylish! Who or what is your biggest fashion inspiration?

I don’t really have any particular fashion inspiration. I really love fashion but I don’t really follow the trends. I just take inspiration from people I meet, magazines, artists, brands etc and try to create my own style. I think I just wear what I like but still try to dress different to everyone.

You’re originally from France – but if you could live anywhere in the world where would you live? Or, alternatively where would you most like to holiday?

I’m from France but from a French Island called Reunion Island (located east of madagascar). So I am an island girl and always will be! Hawaii is number one on my places to go list. I feel free on an island. The nature makes me feel good mentally, physically and inspires me a lot.
