Katy Perry is our favourite pop chameleon. She changes her hairdo more often than we change our sheets and sends a message out to the world every time.
Whilst the media lost their shizzle over her recent dramatic post-Orlando statement chop those who know her best, saw her going back to her roots. Born in October 1984, Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson spent her formative years as a dirty blonde only dyeing it black after cropping and bleaching it white blonde at the age of 15 in an homage to her idol Madonna.
Since then she has built an image for her fun pop persona with huge false eyelashes and experimental make up, embracing hair colour with dyes, extensions and wigs but up until she now has always returned to a glossy dark brown black in between.
Despite being hugely convincing many of these looks have been achieved through good wigs. As a wig wearer myself, I have a keen eye and a open heart for those brave enough to embrace change in this way. Your hair is part of a finished look just like a jacket or lipstick might be, the possibilities for experimentation and reinvention are endless. Wigs can also provide a facade to hide behind when you feel the need. Who will you be today??
For me, Katy’s latest guise, sporting her nose ring (the piercing has always been there but has not been a regular part of her look until more recently) cropped and roughly bleached is a return to her true self. With nowhere to hide it’s time to show her true colours. Katy we love you and hope this chop frees you up to find true happiness 💙 💚 💕
Yet to fully grasp the nettle and embrace her new name and image she sported an innocent and natural dark brown do as she shot to mega stardom with her first true hit ‘I Kissed a Girl’ in 2008.
For her engagement and subsequent wedding(s) to Russell Brand in October 2010 she reverted to the sophisticated glamour of extensions and long shiny locks.
In honour of her role voicing Smurfette KP experimented with blue. Firstly with a big and bouncy glamourous vintage style wig and then by dying her real hair and sporting a sleek one length bob.
From blue to pink Katy went full on bubblegum retro in mid 2011 (not a wig this time!)…..
….followed pretty soon after by a sleek one length faded peachy pink bob later the same year.
Katy and Russell officially split after less than 18 months of married life citing the pressures of her celebrity lifestyle. Following the split Katy returned to her safe place with a long glossy dark mane.
2013 saw KP keeping her tresses dark and glossy but this time her look was cleaner and pared back. She has started to shed some of the mask and we were treated to a glimpse of the real, natural beauty that lies beneath the pop exterior that she has become known for.
2014-2105 was pretty uneventful hair-wise as Perry took her 2013 Prismatic album and a selection of costume wigs on an epic world tour. Except for this, love it or hate it, slime green dye job that is…she announced she was ‘going green for spring’ that year. I truly love this woman.
2016 was the year of Bloom. More natural looks from Katy suggesting she was beginning to feel at ease in her own skin. Later the same year the couple split but that didn’t stop her from having some fun with some (rather excellent! If anyone is reading this who can get me one like either of these I will die happy!) blonde wigs; a dark rooted bleach blonde and a hard bleached short wavy bob.
And so to 2017. My favourite Katy so far. She has shed the showtime make-up and chopped it all off. Gone back to her roots. Quite literally. And, she looks magnificent.
Is it that after more than 10 years in the limelight and a bumpy few years both romantically and musically, KP is perhaps finally ready to face the world as her true self? Or is this yet another clever reinvention?? Only time will tell but for now, we give her a massive double thumbs up.
