John Boyega has often been referred to as a young Denzel Washington by press and movie critics. Not just because of his boyishly handsome looks, but because he has quickly proven himself to be an acting talent beyond measure. This British-Nigerian beauty was born and raised in Peckham in south-east London. Our Man Crush Monday trained at Identity School of Acting in Hackney and starred in a variety of plays and small British films before landing the leading role in the new Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which is due for release on December 17th. We love Boyega’s charisma, his positive energy, and his chic-casual style. Last month he was on the cover of GQ’s tenth anniversary issue with a stunning shoot and interview. This is a rising star if ever we saw one!
Least likely to…get caught in a social media influenced scandal. Since hitting superstardom, Boyega has cleansed his entire social media history – that includes his Instagram photos and tweets from his early days. It’s ok John, we know you’re human, and you have the right to reinvent yourself whenever you please.
Impress him with…your gym membership because judging by those arms in his Phillip Plein t-shirts, Boyega is no stranger to working out sessions. He found training to play a Jedi quite strenuous, lightsabers heavy, and joked that, “…they should do a Star Wars weight loss program.” We’d sign up, John!
Mention…Half of a Yellow Sun. Boyega starred in the film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel of the same name alongside Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor in 2013. Boyega had said that he hoped to avoid being typecast into ‘alpha-hoodie’ protagonist roles and this was his first on-screen role outside of that narrow scope. Well done!
And another thing…when Boyega first read the script for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, it actually made him cry. Awww! We love a sensitive man in a suit. Yay John!
