Athlete Wayde Van Niekerk made his mark in sporting history on Friday after winning the 2016 Olympic gold medal in the men’s 400 metres and smashing Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old world record. The South-African sportsman smashed Johnson’s long standing record by an astonishing 0.15 seconds which has led to many pundits hailing him the athlete most likely to become the poster boy of athletics once Usain Bolt retires. At only 24-years-old we expect to see a lot more of this young star…
Least likely to…be forgotten after the Rio Olympics. Whilst Van Niekerk wasn’t an unknown prior to Rio it certain that following his gold medal and World Record he will have his pick of endorsements and airtime.
Impress him with…Liverpool FC. He’s a huge fan of the English football club.
Mention…rugby. His cousin is South African Rugby Union player and Olympic Rugby Sevens bronze medallist Cheslin Kolbe.
And another thing…despite showing promise in athletics from a young age Van Niekerk still completed higher education and studied Marketing at the University of the Free State.
