Meet Steve Lacy: The 19 Year Old Producing For Kendrick Lamar From His Phone

Meet 19 year old Steve Lacy. Aside from being a member of Grammy-nominated group, The Internet and producing his own music, singer-song writer and producer Steve Lacy has produced for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Twenty88, Isaiah Rashad, J.Cole and Tyler, the Creator. But defying the usual big production and recording studios, Lacy does the majority of his work, including audio engineering and recording on his iPhone.

“Steve Lacy’s Demo”, Lacys first solo project, released last year saw many of the songs created by Lacy on his iPhone, redording vocals and guitar and bass arrangements straight into the mobile’s microphone, using apps such as GarageBand, as well as creating drum patterns on the app Abelton.

The 6-part funk-rock song series and two accompanying visuals, served so show to many young, up and coming artists and producers that there are no excuses when award winning songs can be created through a phone.

Currently Steve Lacy is working with Vampire Weekend on their upcoming album and his most recent collaboration saw him working with Damon Albarn and Kevin Parker of Tame Impala on Kali Uchis debut album ‘Isolation’.
