Water, melanin, bones, blood and a kick ass fashion sense = Solange

Woman Crush Wednesday: Solange Knowles

This weekend was a fun-filled one for Solange Knowles. On Saturday she turned 31 and on Sunday she performed in front of millions on the main stage at Glastonbury.   She’s no longer simply referred to as Beyonce’s baby sister.  The youngest Knowles has carved out a career as a credible recording artist and a top notch style maven at that. Knowles has been in the spotlight since her early teens when her big sister burst onto the music scene as a member of the record-breaking girl group Destiny’s Child. First forward 15 years or so and Knowles has three studio albums under her belt.  Add to this that she is also one of the most respected celebs when it comes to style and fashion (we’re still gushing over her wedding photos from 2014!)…

Why we love her…

Solange Knowles

Least likely to…bite her tongue. The ‘Don’t Touch My Hair’ singer is famed for calling a spade and spade and regularly uses her social media channels to speak out against, often controversial, subjects she feels passionate about.

Impress her with…self-confidence. Solange is one of handful of black celebs in the limelight that embraces her natural hair. But that wasn’t always the case. Prior to learning to love her voluminous, curly ‘fro she once said, “I felt like when I took my weave out, I wasn’t pretty, I wasn’t noticeable”…

Mention…painting. She says, “I think that painting, for me, is such an affirmative expression in that sometimes you don’t know what the outcome is gonna be.  Each stroke and each brush for me is an emotion and, in the end, it comes out as a piece which is the most amazing thing. It definitely provides a different outlet.”

And another thing…before marrying her current husband, video director Alan Ferguson, Knowles was a young bride and married her first husband at the tender age of 17. They divorced after three years but not before she gave birth to her son Daniel Julez J. Smith.
