Wearable Tech: Project Underskin

So, if there’s one bit of wearable technology that may give you the creeps it’s this latest concept – an implanted tattoo.  And it’s not the purely decorative artistic kind you think.  This is more like something out of an 80s sci-fi movie.  NewDealDesign, the company behind the popular Fitbit activity trackers have come up with the concept of Project Underskin.

They’ve envisaged a digital tattoo implanted under the skin that will also  transfer via a handshake, monitor your vital signs and even unlock doors.  Yes – it’s the stuff of nightmares.  Can’t remember the last time I thought to myself, ‘I wish I didn’t have to carry these heavy keys with me…’

The idea is that the implant would work off the body’s own electro-chemical energy meaning that there is no on/off button.   Effectively you’d be able to activate a credit card by simply holding it – imagine the card clash issues?!  Thankfully this is only a concept at the moment but the company envisage that a product like this could be on the market within the next five years.

What do you think – would you welcome a product like this?  Or is this an unnecessary invasive gadget? Tweet us at @ithestylist #ProjectUnderskin
