The South-African born former dancer and child model became the first South African actress to win an Oscar for her moving performance (and unbelievable physical transformation) in the 2003 movie Monster, which saw her portray real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos who was executed in 2002 for the murder of six men. Not only did she win an Oscar but she also picked up a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor’s Guild Award for the role.
