Woman Crush Wednesday: Thandie Newton

Woman Crush Wednesday: Thandie Newton

Sunday saw the series finale of the gripping BBC drama Line of Duty so who else to be out Woman Crush Wednesday but Thandie Newton. The British actress, who is also one of the stars of the hugely popular sci-fi series Westworld, had her sights set on a dance career but a back injury squashed that dream and the dance world’s loss was the acting field’s gain.  After landing her first role in 1991 opposite Nicole Kidman in Flirting, Newton’s next big role was opposite the late Tupac Shakur and Tim Roth in gritty cop film Gridlock’d. Other notable credits include Mission: Impossible II, The Chronicles of Riddick, Crash, Norbit, For Colored Girls and Half of a Yellow Sun

Least likely to…zip it. In an interview with The Guardian last year Newton was refreshingly vocal about her views on “taboo” subjects such as race and sexual abuse in Hollywood…

Impress her with…a good script. She says, “I don’t put the pressure on myself to be a very successful movie star. I want to enjoy being an actor and I want to be challenged by the roles I take. What is lovely is that I’ll get sent a small movie, and you know that by virtue of me being involved they get their money and that’s fantastic.”

Mention…Charlie’s Angels. Newton was forced to turn down a role in the 2000 film version of Charlie’s Angel due to conflicting schedules with Mission: Impossible . II. The role eventually went to Lucy Lui.

And another thing…Newton clearly has a great sense of humour and fun as former Friend’s star David Schwimmer describes her as the ‘Queen of practical jokes’.
